Yesterday I went to the vet with our little Fey-Fey. A card had arrived via mail telling me her yearly shots needed updating. Normally, I do all cats at the same time, but Fey had come to us last October and needed her vaccinations as soon as possible in order to be able to join the colony.
I also decided to not vaccinate them all at the same time this year, for practical reasons. Though it gets you a discount at the vets, transporting six cats all at once is... challenging. Now, I do plan to take the five up there at the same time in the New Year, when their card will arrive. However, Fey Fey is already easily stressed, and taking them all at once as well as Fey would be even more stressfull for her.
So yesterday, I got out the basket, placed it in the bathroom, called my boyfriend to help me and got to work. My boyfriend was anything but thrilled. Last time we had to catch her was to get her spayed, and he had the scratches to prove it hadn't been easy. Then again...he didn't LISTEN to me while we were hunting her down, thinking his methods were better :P
So this time, he followed my instructions to the T. And wouldn't you know it...it was a walk in the park.
A couple of days ago, I got the card from the clinic, saying that Fey has to come back to the clinic for her anual shots. And I started thinking..man, it has been a year already since she arrived in this house. And although she is nowhere near as cuddly yet as I'd like her to get, she has shown vast improvement :)
It is hard to believe that only a year ago, I brought home a small ball of fluff with razorsharp claws and big fearful yet beautiful eyes following my every move. In that year, she became part of my colony, became joined at the hip with our Falk, grew up to be quite the little slutty kitty seducing our Falk in every way possible, and lost some of that hysterical fear she had in her when she came in. And my, has she grown. I'm going to try and get a snapshot of her (still can't stare at her, including cameras, otherwise she runs), so you can see the difference. She's become a beautiful big cat.
It's going to be such a joy to catch her again for those shots. And my, is the doctor going to be jumping up and down to get their hands on her (and her paws with claws on their hands *grin*)
Well, it's been rough couple of months, but we're back :P
Sooo much has happened. The story I wanna tell today though, is the one of Fey Fey.
A couple of months ago, all was quiet in the house, when suddenly the Fey decides it is time to grow up. In the middle of the quiet night, I'm lying in my bed when this kitten next to me goes "mreoooww", just once. I remember thinking:" That's odd, Fey doesn't usually use verbal signals." And all went quiet again. The next morning though, I get up to feed the colony when Fey mreows at me loudly..and again....and again. Not half an hour later, she has made her point. Mreow pretty much equaled "get me a hot young stud, now!" During the day, she gets worse. I called the clinic which were luckily able to get me an appointment in two days. In the evening, she starts rolling around on the carpet like a mad kitten. It was like having Lulu and Prinny in heat all at the same time! Luckily, she went from mreowing to prrring and rolling by the evening, so we could go to bed in a relatively quiet house.
That night, I hear the Fey mrrrooing and I ignore it. At some point though, I start hearing this sound going 'Mrr mrrr mrr.' I wake up, go look at her. And what I see at that point was just...surreal. I'm looking at this Fey, all horny and twirly on the floor, and a Falkie looking at her very confused. He tries to lick her face, she mrrrs, he tries to play with her, she mrrss some more at him. Finally, he had decided to get on top of her, since that's what she wanted, bite her neck...but then he kinda got confused as to what to do next. I'm standing there in disbelief, looking at a neutered male cat which had never shown any interest in Lulu when she went all horny and mad, when suddenly a thought occurs to me: "Mmm, I guess men of all species need to be taught how to do this properly." It didn't help that I'd seen another species, nl horses, at it a week before, and that the stallion had been an inexperienced one as well.
My two biggest fluffballs are sooo cute. Yesterday, I sprayed some catnip on the carpet. At first there was a stand off between all six of them to get to the spot, and of all kittens, Trini took it over. After she was done though, Fey Fey was next. I couldn't believe it.
Turns out she was finally relaxed enough to enjoy a little catnip. Before yesterday I didn't even know she was sensitive to catnip (it's a genetic thing, some cats do not react to it). But she spent about 25 minutes rolling around, stretching, cuddling and being all kinds of crazy. At this point though, Arwen decides that it is her turn. And Fey was not agreeing. They started rolling around to get the most out of the catnip while pushing each other away. So I'm looking at this stripey white-black gigantic longhaired ball of furr rolling like crazy over my carpet. I am sooo bummed I didn't have my camera! Utterly adorable ;)
We are getting somewhere..every so slowely. Nowadays, Fey-Fey already doesn't wake me up anymore at 6, but at 8 or 9...I can live with that. And, this morning she was hungry enough to not be scared away by my presence. In fact, she let me pet her and even lift her up to put her at another foodbowl (she was pushing her luck with Trini) near her beloved Falkie. The only reason I got away with that though was because I was actually almost sitting on the floor myself. Standing is still a big no no and walking an even bigger no no.
But I am finding her on scratching posts instead of underneath and in stuff. She still does that, crawl under the bed and in the closet, but she is getting more assertive. She is a regular customer in the living now, and spends most of the time at the food bowl, water fountain or underneath the livingroom coffee table. However, I am noticing slight changes there too. She dares to run around now. Only the couch is being avoided since I usually sit there (my boyfriend is on a business trip btw).
Yesterday, I put up the christmas tree. I do one every year, but I take a small one, since we have an appartment. I'd already bought it two days ago, but let them get used to it without decoration first. However, once I took out the christmas decoration, it was on. All cats were going wild on it, and even Fey ventured a sniff.
I lifted the tree on a little side table we have, and decorated it with lights. All cats, including Fey took their turn jumping up there and sniffing the bright thing in the corner. Then, I put in the rest of the decoration. For the rest of the night, the tree was being sniffed, and not in the least by our Fey. She jumped up on the table, sniffed the ornaments, the tree itself and even contemplated jumping onto the window sill (which is very close by). She eventually decided to take up residence underneath the table with the christmas tree :)
Well, have you ever heard of witching hour? Did you know that cats go bonkers at that time as well? I know, from now on. It is the hour between midnight and one, when all the crazy ghosts wake up, witches do their invocations, and cats go completely off the deep end.
Yesterday, I was stretching with most of my kittens on the floor, on our carpet, when suddenly a Faith appears. Now, that on its own is common by now, but this time she wandered around the room. You see, the food bowl is right next to the kitchen, so she can just stay in the kitchen almost without having to go into the living, which was what she has done so far. The waterbowl is pretty much the same deal.
She decided to check out all the kitties in the sleeping spots, and check out all the hide-outs under tables and stuff. Meanwhile, I grabbed the opportunity to start a game. Not long after, I had six very intrigued kittens trying to follow the fishing toy I was making go balistic, including a Fey-Fey. Exactly 7 minutes before the clock said it was 1 am, Fey disappeared again and the game was finished. Cats are such bizarre kittens.
Of course, the worst part is that cats go bonkers twice a day, once on Witching Hour and once around 6 am. And tonight...they did it again. Falkie joined us in the bed, as did Fey. They again stole my pillow and part of the matras, walked all over us and pretty much purred us awake. My boyfriend went nuts. It was like two hours before we were going to get up, and we were completely awake, with purring kittens using us as a trampoline and as pillows.
It is seriously time to teach Fey that there are rules in this house. Yes, you may join us in the bed ,but at least be subtle about it. Yes, you may drink water, but no, you may not drink it out of my glass standing next to the bed. Yes, you may sit on the tables in the bedroom, but no, you cannot do that on the tables in the living as food gets served there.
This morning I woke up with a Falkie and a Fey-Fey on my bed. She was trying real hard to get his attention and he was trying very hard to get mine. So I petted him and wanted to pet her, but she wasn't interested. Meanwhile she'd crawled so close to him that he was starting to slap her lightly, which she of course reciprocated...and so a game of footsie was held on my bed.
When he finally decided to go to the living room, she again, followed suit and went with. He jumped on the window sill and she decided to meanwhile get some food (she doesn't dare to jump up there yet). He came down to go drink something, she immediately followed, but got stared down when she wanted to drink simultaneously. So she waited her turn till he was done, passing the time with secretively sniffing his ass. Then it was her turn, but that didn't last long since Auntie Lulu who doesn't feel very auntie just yet, hissed her off again. Fey was polite and greeted her properly, but Lulu was not to be swayed. She even sat next to the water fountain in an uncomfortable position so she could drink while keeping an eye on Fey who disappeared in to the back rooms again.![]()
I'd say this is a tragic story which is known to mankind in many versions:
Cinderella version includes a knight in shining armor on a white horse (Falkie), a poor damsel from the gutter in need of much rescuing (Fey) and an angry witch keeping them appart (Lulu)
Translated to human reality: 16 year old falls head over heels for a 24 year old who doesn't know how to handle it so he just hopes it goes away with a disapproving mother to-be-in-law in the middle :P
Urgh...what a night. So this was unexpected. This morning, around 5 am, I'm estimating, Falkie had the brilliant idea of joining me in the bed. Now, this in itself is not an unfamiliar thing. He lies down, cuddles a bit, lets me sleep and if I move too much, he's gone. This time, however..he had a follower.
That's right. For the past couple of weeks, Fey-Fey has been learning from Falkie, since he doesn't hiss at her as the others do: first it was how to use the hiding space of the bed to your advantage, then it was lying on the bed during the day, and since a couple of nights, when he joins me in the bed, she will run around a bit too and sleep at the edge of the bed (and get kicked occasionally unfortunately).
This night however...She again followed suit and jumped with him into the bed, but doesn't stay at the end of the bed. I woke up when I realized that...hang on..that's a different kind of fur than Falkie has and besides...he is lying on the other side! Then Fey and Falkie decided to take over the bed. He laid down against me, and she took over my pillow. Meanwhile Falkie had noticed I was awake and did his morning 'Purrrr'. My boyfriend next to me started to wake up and roll around. Falkie and Fey got into an argument and started a bit of 'battlefield bed' games. Eventually, Falkie left and Fey stayed. I got her off my pillow and carefully placed her right under it, in my arms. No other cat, except maybe Arwen when she is in a good mood and Lulu when she is in her clingy mood, accepts this. Fey purred like there was no tomorrow. In the next half hour, I got cuddles to death, and my boyfriend got purred awake (that thing really has a motor running inside her I think!)
Yes, I have finally gotten the opportunity to dazzle you with our new beauty! My boyfriend was so kind as to dig up the cable I needed for my camera, and voila:
Aint she gorgeous? A regular little wild cat with semi-long hair. Can you ask for anything else???
Meanwhile, this wild cat is quite happy indoors. She has faced her fear of the next room, and discovered that she loooovvveess hiding under the bed, as it is way bigger and safer and people have to dig up half the bed to get to you, yay! This knowledge is curtesy of Falkie of course who uses the same trick to get around being medicated.
She has also found out that Falkie does not hiss at her, so she is quite happy to share his territory with him. He doesn't mind much, unless she gets in his way and wayy too close. This morning she was mimicking everything he was doing, including jumping up on top of us while we were still asleep. Eventually, he had enough and gave her a spanking since she was stealing his attention, namely mine, as I was petting her instead of him (or at least that's how he interpreted it, I was actually petting them both in turn). Oops..did I forget to mention that she doesn't sleep in the small room since yesterday?
Well, you see, since a couple of days she has been allowed outdoors and she did go for it, after much hesitation. But with a lot of toys and play we convinced her to take a look around. First, I made sure I was there to supervise...only to discover that she was a lot more running around the room when I wasn't there (since I was going to the bathroom or something). So, the next day I left open the door and let her play under the bed and even in the room itself, while I was in the front. The day after that we found her sharing the bed, snoozing with Falkie, each on their half of the bed.
